The next few weeks my blog will be about my Mission Trip to Haiti. Since the early eighties, my father has helped to establish a mission in Haiti - the poorest country in the western hemisphere. Although I've always been intrigued by the mission work that my father does in Haiti and elsewhere, it wasn't until a year ago that I made my first trip to the impoverished country. I caught the fever.
The mission organization I serve with is called The Lazarus Project. It's a wonderful grass-roots mission "owned and operated" by churches and the passionate people within. It has no affiliation with a super charity, like Red Cross, or a national church body. I think that's what I love about it. You can really feel attached and impactful when working with the other people who have felt ownership of this effort.
In my first trip down there, I went with the expectation that I would be "ministering" to the people of Haiti. I thought I would go there and in some way make their lives better. Sure, I did some useful projects making a tiny dent in the huge pile of plight. However, I quickly realized that it was I who was being "ministered" to. It was my life that was being touched by the people of Haiti. I was the one who left there significantly different with a perspective on life that is forever changed.
Life is good! Real Good! Sometimes we get things out of perspective.

Hello Andy,
ReplyDeleteWe haven't met but I just wanted to say that I am proud of you and I'm pleased to see your involvements. I came across this blog site as a result of your out-of-office message that was forwarded to me by a colleague.
Keep up the great work!
